Bermuda House is a four star self catering Victorian holiday house in a prime central location with outstanding sea views. The harbour and the blue flag sandy beach of Ventnor Bay are a couple of minutes walk away and Ventnor's shops are even closer. Within ten minutes walk there are numerous places to eat and drink. The house is on a private road with exclusive on-road parking for two cars and there is a private cliff-top grassed garden with a tropical tree. The house has high ceilings with chandeliers, fine cornicing and ceiling roses and a lovely carved staircase and was built around 1883 on the site of Ventnor Mill. A blue plaque commemorates Sir Edward Elgar spending part of his honeymoon on the first floor of this house in May 1889. From the house Sir Edward wrote to a friend "We are liking this place very much & have nice rooms overlooking the sea..." The accommodation was completely refurbished last year, to sleep ten in five bedrooms, and features a massive front to back kitchen/diner at its heart. New oak flooring has been fitted and the house is decorated and furnished in a contemporary style. Although a period house there are no shortage of modern facilities. All main televisions have free to view satellite TV,with a large widescreen colour LCD TV with DVD and VHS players in the main living room. There is a dishwasher, washer/drier, fridge and freezer in the kitchen. Wifi broadband access is provided for guests who bring their own laptops. There are three bath/shower rooms plus a cloakroom and there is central heating through most of the house.
Known to the Victorians as "England's Madeira", Ventnor is noted for its sunny summers and mild winters. It is built on the sheltered undercliff and dominated by the highest point of the Isle of Wight, St Boniface Down, immediately behind the town. The town has undergone significant regeneration in recent years and was recently described on BBC Radio Solent as the new Notting Hill. The house has views of the Down at the back as spectacular as those of the sea at the front. Bermuda House is now available for letting as a holiday cottage for whole weeks and for short breaks outside the main season. Please e-mail the owners if you would like further information or to make a reservation. Read some recent comments from the visitors book.
