As summer fades and the August crowds head home, there’s still plenty to do in Ventnor. Autumn along the Undercliff isn’t a time for winding down – it’s the season when the town truly comes into its own. Thanks to our Mediterranean microclimate, warm sea temperatures linger well into October, while Saint Boniface Down protects the town from chilly northern breezes.

Crisp Coastal Walks and Autumnal Colour

Autumn is undeniably the best season for walking on the Isle of Wight. The low golden sunlight hits the English Channel, creating spectacular vistas across the cliffs.

• The Undercliff & Steephill Cove: Without the summer queues, you can enjoy the quiet beauty of this traditional fishing cove, watching waves roll over the lobster pots with a hot coffee in hand.  It is a relatively easy stroll along the coast path, starting behind the Spyglass.

• Ventnor Park & Botanic Garden: Head west to Ventnor Park to admire the historic bandstand, originally on the end of Ventnor Pier. Continue into the Ventnor Botanic Garden, where subtropical plants thrive alongside autumn-blooming exotic flora from the Southern Hemisphere.

• Up on the Downs: For panoramic views across the entire island, ascend Saint Boniface Down. The autumn air is crisp and clear, giving you incredible visual clarity. Keep an eye out for the local herd of feral goats grazing high above the town!

As the afternoons grow shorter, there is nothing better than ducking into a traditional local spot to stimulate the taste buds.

• The Spyglass Inn: Perched on the water’s edge at the end of the Esplanade, this well-loved pub comes into its own in autumn. Grab a table in one of the cosy bars, order a plate of fresh local seafood or a hearty roast, and watch the changing colours of sunset.

• Town Centre Dining: Explore the independent restaurants along the High Street and Church Street, like Stripped Brasserie, True Food Kitchen or  Cantina , or venture down to the seafront to the acclaimed Smoking Lobster. Autumn menus across town showcase local produce, from island-reared meats to seasonal catches from the local fishing boats.

• Ventnor Exchange: Drop into this busy hub on Church Street for a hot drink, browse their extensive vinyl record shop, or enjoy intimate autumn gig, comedy preview, or creative workshop.

• Ventnor Arts Club: Check their seasonal schedule for live satellite broadcasts from the National Theatre, independent autumn film screenings, and acoustic music evenings inside a beautifully converted old bank building.

  Heritage Self-Guided Tours: With cooler temperatures, walking the steep, historic “chutes” and stone steps following Time Travel Ventnor is a delight. Trace the footsteps of famous historical visitors like Charles Dickens or Sir Edward Elgar, who famously honeymooned at Bermuda House.

Wild Swimming and Autumn Sunbathing

Don’t pack away your swimwear just yet! Because the sea has been warming all through June, July, and August, sea temperatures in September and October are often significantly warmer than in late spring.

Ventnor’s sheltered, south-facing bay acts as a natural sun trap. On clear autumn mornings, you’ll find plenty of local wild swimmers taking a refreshing dip before wrapping up in their dry robes on the beach.
