The Isle of Wight has lots of great places for a picnic. Here are eight of our favourite picnic spots on the Island that don’t require an admission fee:
Ventnor Park: This serene park offers well-maintained gardens, a putting green, and a bandstand. It’s perfect for a leisurely picnic with family or friends, surrounded by vibrant flowers and tranquil ponds.
Steephill Cove: A secluded beach accessible only by foot from the Ventnor to St Lawrence Road. Steephill Cove offers a picturesque setting with charming beach huts and crystal-clear waters. It’s ideal for a romantic picnic or a quiet retreat.
Parkhurst Forest: Parkhurst Forest is wonderful to wander around on a hot day. There are a number of benches dotted around the site to enjoy a quiet sit down and a picnic. If you are lucky you might spot a red squirrel, as this is one of the top places they can be seen.
St. Catherine’s Lighthouse: Located at the southernmost tip of the Isle of Wight, this spot offers breathtaking coastal views. The open grassy area surrounding the lighthouse is perfect for a scenic picnic.
Appuldurcombe House: The expansive grounds of this historic site in Wroxall provide a unique picnic experience. Enjoy a meal amidst the ruins and beautiful lawns, combining history and nature.
The Green at Gurnard: Sit here and watch the local sailing clubs in action. During the summer months, you can spot yachts and catamarans in the water for the many regattas.
Brading Down: This spot on the Downs Road between Newport and Brading provides a spectacular vista and is a favourite haunt for many. On summer days, there’s usually an ice cream van for afters.
Red Cliff, Yaverland: If you fancy a barbecue on the beach, this is a great spot when the tide is out. The Isle of Wight Council allows barbecues here, making it perfect for a beachside picnic.
