A Foodie’s Guide to Ventnor on the Isle of Wight: From Harbour to High Street

Ventnor has fast become the culinary capital of the Isle of Wight. Thanks to a unique microclimate and a bustling fishing harbour, the “Ventnor Food Scene” is a mix of incredibly fresh seafood, high-end independent bistros, and authentic global flavours.

One of the joys of staying in our self-catering accommodation is the freedom it gives you. You aren’t tied to a hotel’s set dinner times or limited menus. You can spend your afternoon “window tasting” on the High Street, grab a world-class takeaway, or dress up for a night out at a top-tier brasserie – all within a few minutes’ walk of your front door.

The “Must-Visit” High Street Gems

Stripped Brasserie (High Street)

Currently holding the #1 spot on TripAdvisor for the entire Isle of Wight, Stripped Brasserie is the town’s latest success story. Located in a stunningly converted old bank, this husband-and-wife-run spot serves vibrant Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

The Vibe: Energetic, warm, and stylish.

The Food: Think charred octopus with harissa, slow-cooked lamb Kleftiko, and gourmet burgers. Even celebrity chefs have been spotted enjoying a meal here!

Masala Bay (Pier Street)

For those seeking authentic spice, Masala Bay is a must. It is renowned across the Island for its high-quality Indian cuisine, offering a sophisticated menu that balances traditional favourites with unique chef’s specials.

Why guests love it: It is perfect for a sit-down celebratory meal, but they also offer a fantastic takeaway service. There is nothing quite like bringing a fragrant, high-end curry back to the comfort of your holiday cottage after a long day of coastal walking.

Cantina (High Street)

This is a local favourite for a reason. Part bakery, part cafe, and part restaurant, Cantina serves some of the best sourdough on the Island.

Self-catering tip: Pop in early to grab a fresh loaf of their artisan bread and some local eggs to cook up the ultimate “at home” breakfast in your own kitchen.

True Food Kitchen (High Street)

Nestled in the heart of the town, this intimate restaurant focuses on “creative world food” with a heavy Asian influence. The menu changes seasonally, but the quality is consistently exceptional. It’s small, so booking is essential.

Seafood Straight from the Boat

Ventnor Haven Fishery
Ventnor Haven Fishery (The Esplanade)

You cannot visit Ventnor without eating something from the “Haven.” The family-run fishery at the end of the Esplanade catches their own crab and lobster daily.

The Move: Buy a dressed crab or a “crab ramekin” to eat right there on the harbour wall. Alternatively, pick up some fresh catch of the day to grill back at your accommodation for a true sea-to-table experience.

The Crab Shed (Steephill Cove)

A short, scenic walk along the coastal path brings you to Steephill Cove. This tiny, hidden bay has no road access, and the Crab Shed serves their famous crab pasties to those who make the journey.

Dining with a View

Smoking Lobster (The Esplanade)

For an upscale evening, the Smoking Lobster offers Pan-Asian fusion right on the seafront. Imagine fresh Ventnor lobster served with ginger, chili, and lime, paired with a view of the English Channel.

The Spyglass Inn (The Esplanade)

Sitting at the very end of the beach, the Spyglass is world-famous. The experience of sitting on the terrace with a pint of Wight Gold and a platter of local scampi as the waves crash below is unbeatable.

Something Sweet and Quirky

Crave (Spring Hill)

This isn’t just an ice cream parlour; it’s an institution. The flavours change daily (think anything from “Bacon and Maple” to “Jammie Dodger”) and are all made on-site.

Pro Tip for Our Guests:

Most of Ventnor’s top-rated restaurants are small and independently owned. Because the town is such a foodie destination, tables at places like Stripped Brasserie and the Smoking Lobster often book up in advance. When you stay with us, you have the best of both worlds: the finest restaurants on the Island just a short stroll away, and a beautiful, fully-equipped home to retreat to when you’re finished. We highly recommend booking your evening meals as soon as you confirm your holiday dates with us!
