Every year, Ventnor manages to turn the quiet lull between Christmas and New Year into something spectacular, and the 2025 Boxing Day Swim promises to be no exception. In aid of Ventnor Carnival and Ventnor based cancer support charity PATCH, the brave, the bold, and the delightfully eccentric take the plunge all along the town’s Esplanade.
By mid‑morning on Boxing Day, the seafront will be buzzing – families shaking off the Christmas haze, dogs trotting about in festive jumpers, and locals greeting each other. The promenade becomes a patchwork of colour, chatter, and anticipation.
And then there are the swimmers themselves. If previous years are anything to go by, we can expect a glorious parade of costumes: Santa hats bobbing in the breeze, elves adjusting their tights, inflatable turkeys wobbling about, and at least one person dressed as something completely inexplicable. The creativity is part of the charm – and part of the comedy.

Watching the swimmers hit the water is a spectacle in itself: the shrieks, the laughter, the immediate shock on their faces, and the triumphant whoops from those who manage more than a quick dip.
But what makes the Ventnor Boxing Day Swim truly special isn’t just the plunge – it’s the sense of community wrapped around it. It’s the families cheering on their loved ones, the friends filming each other’s reactions, the strangers swapping jokes about the temperature. It’s Ventnor at its best: quirky, welcoming, and full of heart.
Once the swimmers emerge — shivering, exhilarated, and wrapped in towels — the town will ease back into its holiday rhythm. Cafés will fill with people warming up over coffee and cake, children will argue over the best costume, and the sea will settle back into its winter calm, ready to do it all again next year.
As a spectator, standing on the shoreline, soaking in the atmosphere, and cheering them on feels like the perfect way to spend Boxing Day.
