Winter pub circular walks on the Isle of Wight

Winter on the Isle of Wight is great for walking, if you avoid the muddy routes. Here are some shortish circular walks which have the added advantage of a pub or café en-route for lunch.

St Catherine’s Lighthouse & The Buddle Inn (Niton)

A classic southern tip walk with big skies, dramatic seas and firm coastal paths that stay walkable even after rain. Start at Niton, follow the lane down to Castlehaven, loop around St Catherine’s Lighthouse, then climb gently back up to The Buddle Inn — a 16th century smugglers’ pub perfect for a winter fire and hearty lunch.
Distance: ~3.5 miles

Yarmouth to Fort Victoria & The Bugle Coaching Inn

A breezy coastal-and-woodland loop that avoids the worst of winter mud. Begin in Yarmouth, follow the promenade to Fort Victoria Country Park, then return via the cycle track. The Bugle Coaching Inn makes a perfect halfway or end of walk lunch stop.
Distance: ~4.5 miles

Cowes to Gurnard Coastal Path & The Woodvale

A paved and well drained seafront walk ideal for crisp winter days. Start in Cowes, follow the Esplanade to Gurnard, stop at The Woodvale overlooking the Solent, then loop back through quiet residential lanes.
Distance: ~3 miles

Bembridge Harbour Circular & The Pilot Boat Inn

Bembridge lifeboat station Isle of Wight
This is one of the driest winter walks on the island thanks to its mix of pavements, boardwalks and compacted paths. Start at Bembridge Lifeboat Station, loop around the harbour, cross the causeway and stop at The Pilot Boat Inn for wood fired pizza or a pint.
Distance: ~4 miles

Shanklin to Luccombe Clifftop Walk & The Fisherman’s Cottage

This route stays surprisingly firm underfoot thanks to its coastal path and promenade sections. Begin at Shanklin Old Village, walk the clifftops to Luccombe, then descend to Shanklin beach for lunch at The Fisherman’s Cottage before looping back.
Distance: ~4 miles

Arreton Down & The Dairyman’s Daughter (Arreton Barns)

A chalk downland walk that drains well in winter. Start at Arreton Barns, climb Arreton Down for sweeping views, then descend for a cosy lunch at The Dairyman’s Daughter — one of the island’s best winter pubs.
Distance: ~3 miles

Freshwater Bay to Tennyson Monument & The Piano Café

A short but spectacular ridge walk along well drained chalk paths. Begin at Freshwater Bay, climb to Tennyson Monument, then descend for lunch at The Piano Café before looping back along the coastal road.
Distance: ~4 miles

Ryde to Seaview Promenade & The Old Fort

The Old Fort Seaview Isle of Wight
A flat, easy winter walk with almost no mud at all. Start at Ryde Canoe Lake, follow the seawall to Seaview, enjoy lunch at The Old Fort, then return the same way or loop back via quiet village streets.
Distance: ~4 miles

Wootton Creek Circular & The Tide Mill

A gentle woodland-and-creekside walk that avoids heavy mud thanks to gravelled paths and quiet lanes. Start at Wootton Bridge, follow the creek, then stop at The Tide Mill pub before completing the loop.
Distance: ~3.5 miles
