Ventnor is a great centre for walking and there are many walks from Ventnor that don’t involve using the car. Here are a few of my favourites:
1. Ventnor to Steephill Cove
This scenic walk starts in the heart of Ventnor and heads west along the coastal path to Steephill Cove. This walk is relatively easy and suitable for families with children. As you follow the path, you’ll be treated to stunning sea views, the sound of waves crashing against cliffs, and the colourful flowers of the Botanic Gardens. Steephill Cove is a tranquil spot with a pebbly beach, perfect cafes, and quirky beach huts – an ideal place for a little rest before you head back.
2. Ventnor Down Circular Walk
This moderately challenging walk begins at the old railway station with a climb to the top of Ventnor Downs, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the island. The route winds through diverse landscapes including heathland, grassland, and forested areas. It’s particularly lovely in the spring and summer when wildflowers blanket the downs and migratory birds fill the sky. The walk is around 5 miles long, taking you past landmarks like the Radar Station and the Worsley Monument. As you descend back into Ventnor, you’ll pass through charming rural pathways.
3. St. Boniface Down with Old Railway Line
This historic walk combines natural beauty with a touch of nostalgia. Starting in Ventnor, head up to St. Boniface Down, the highest point on the island. You’ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the island and the English Channel. From there, follow the route down towards Bonchurch and pick up the old railway line that once connected Ventnor to Shanklin. Walking along this disused track, you’ll come across remnants of the Victorian era, such as old bridges and tunnels. The path is mostly shaded, making it a great choice for warmer days.
4. Ventnor to Bonchurch Village
This short yet rewarding walk connects Ventnor to the nearby quaint village of Bonchurch. The walk starts in the center of Ventnor and heads east along the sea wall, offering continuous sea views and soothing sea breezes. The path takes you past small coves and rocky beaches, with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the scenery. Bonchurch itself is a gem, with its pretty cottages, ancient church, and picturesque pond. It’s a lovely spot to explore before heading back to Ventnor on the road.
All of these walks from Ventnor can be accessed from our accommodation and provide a programme for a lovely long weekend away. Chose where to stay by clicking here.
